Background and Professional History

Dr. Safir earned his undergraduate and medical degrees in the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University, where he also completed his urology residency. During his residency, he was awarded the Dr. Susan Perlman Award as the senior resident among all specialties “who best exemplified academic excellence, special leadership skills, and compassion for patients.”

After his time at Northwestern, Dr. Safir completed two year-long fellowships in Male (UCSF) and Female (UCLA) Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery. His mentors at these institutions were Dr. Jack McAninch and Dr. Shlomo Raz. Additionally, Dr. Safir served as Section Chief of Reconstructive Urology at New York Medical College and as a Clinical Instructor in Urology at UCLA and UCSF.

While practicing urology in Los Angeles, he served as President of the Los Angeles Urological Society. Dr. Safir is not only board-certified by the American Board of Urology but also serves as a Diplomate of The Board in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Safir gained extensive experience over five years performing genital-affirming surgeries at one of the world's highest volume gender surgery centers and is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH.) He has performed over 200 phalloplasty procedures.
