Why consider penile implants?
The ability to be intimate with a partner is among the most satisfying and gender-confirming experiences for a transman, and penile implants can help make penetration during intercourse a reality for the FTM client.
This surgery is typically performed about 9 months after phalloplasty, and is achieved by inserting a semi-rigid rod or inflatable penile implant into the phallus, along with testicular implants to fill out the scrotum. These implants are entirely invisible to the eye and are fully concealed within the body.
There are two main types of implants:
There are two-piece and three-piece implants that are filled with saline fluid from a reservoir within the body. They are inflated by a pump that is typically placed within the scrotum.
These are rigid tubes that can be pointed upwards for penetration and then pointed downwards again afterwards. They are generally more cost-effective and easy to use, but there is the disadvantage of a non-flaccid phallus at all times.
